background

Xuefu spent the first few years of her life watching her mother suffer. Of course, it was something she always tried hiding from her precious children. A famous Chinese actress, her mother sacrificed her career and retired from the film and entertainment scene at the prime of her years to be a full-time parent, choosing Xuefu and Niu over the fame and glitz and glamour. She was never lacking as a mother; she told them bedtime stories and kissed them goodnight, she was present at every parent-teacher meeting, and she always took them on trips and travels abroad.

Even when her mother fell ill, she never faltered with her duties, choosing to take care of her daughters instead of herself. She was losing weight, and Xuefu still remembers how her mother's breasts were hard when she touched them, one bigger than the other, though her mother would insist that she was fine. She refused to go to the hospital, and instead insisted on taking traditional herbal medicines and other folk treatments. Xuefu always thought her mother would get better - that's what she was always told, and her mother was an excellent actress. Unfortunately, she could only act for so long, and a time came when the facade had to come to an end. Xuefu still remembers the day all too clearly - it was a Wednesday, and the sky had looked strange that day despite the good weather; she was at school when she was told, and though she had rushed with her sister to the hospital, her mother's body was already cold. No answer came to Xuefu when she'd called her mother's name, and when she turned her mother over, blood came out of her mouth - it was only then that she'd realized her mother had been lying all this time, and how little she knew about her mother's struggle.

Xuefu was only nine when her mother passed away, and Niu was five. Her father, a Chief Operating Officer of a successful logistics company her grandfather had built from scratch, took on more projects and hours at work and spent lesser time at home, perhaps to cope with the death of his beloved wife. Xuefu was forced to mature early and take on the role of a substitute mother for her younger sister - she had to put Niu over herself, had to be strong for her little sister, had to take care of her as no one else would. Though she initially struggled with it, having to figure out this new role for herself which led to some counterproductive measures on her part, it led to the sisters becoming even closer, which made it slightly easier for them when their father decided to uproot them and take them to Korea, as their grandfather had decided to expand the business and wanted their father to head the branch in Seoul.

Korea was difficult at first. They had no relatives to lean on, could barely speak the language, and missed their friends and their hometown greatly. Still, they had to make the most of their situation, and Xuefu, who was 15 then, did her best to study the culture and the language. Eventually, with her friendly, upbeat personality, she began making friends, and even though she still missed Taiwan, she was soon able to adjust to life in Seoul, becoming part of her school's drama club and swimming club. When she was 18, she was scouted by a modeling agency, and though she was never once strapped for cash, she wanted to earn money for herself. She started to walk local shows, and eventually campaigns for DKNY, Chanel, and others; it was something she was good at. However, when she was advised to concentrate on her modeling career, Xuefu had to decline, as she'd decided that she wanted to take the path her mother did, and become an actress. Yonsei was one of her choice universities, and the one she chose to attend after receiving a letter of acceptance.

Pledging to Sigma Kappa was an easy choice. The Greek life appealed to Xuefu, particularly the idea of making connections that would last long after college was over. Sigma Kappa appealed to her most, and it was the house that gave her a sense of belonging, enough to want to make her pledge. Now, the sisters are like family to her, and being a natural leader and nurturer due to her upbringing, she was nominated and voted Vice President of their house. She still works part-time as a model, though she maintains her focus on her studies and her extracurricular activities, all of which she manages to juggle skilfully.
